He was given a rough ride from the travelling Toon Army but Alan Pardew was forced to defend his own fans after Fabricio Coloccini was hit above the eye by a coin.
Newcastle’s angry caretaker boss John Carver hit out at the Crystal Palace thug who launched the missile from the stands as the Argentine defender celebrated Papiss Cisse’s 42nd minute goal.
Carver fumed: “It just can’t happen can it? It takes one idiot to throw an coin, I have seen it and it misses Colo’s eye by an inch – another inch and it could blind him.
“It has got to be taken out of the game. What is disappointing from their point of view is that they have an unbelievable crowd here, an unbelievable atmosphere – it is a fanatical group of supporters in that corner.
“I hope the authorities deal with it and I’m sure they will because it will be on TV every other minute and rightly so. Let’s find out who it was and sort it out.”
The FA are set to investigate after Coloccini picked up the coin, thrown from the Holmesdale Road End, and handed it to match referee Andre Marriner.
Pardew said: “I saw the referee come over to the linesman and hand him something. It would be a shame if that was an incident – a random fan acting poorly.
“If that is the case then it is unusual for this club because we have a great record of behaviour so I am sure we will look into it.”
The flashpoint overshadowed a fine comeback from Palace after Cisse had headed in from Daryl Janmaat’s 42nd-minute cross.
Wilfried Zaha failed to prevent the ball going in from the right and defender Damien Delaney mistimed his attempted headed clearance. It was easy for Cisse’s ninth goal of the season.
The travelling Toon fans, ignoring a plea from their former boss to “move on and try to cherish the good days” from his time at St James’s Park, tried to barrack Pardew.
But the Eagles boss had the last laugh when Yannick Bolasie, back from the Africa Cup of Nations, came off the bench to set up Fraizer Campbell’s leveller.
