Frank Lampard offered a moment of true class to a Stoke City youth player making his debut during last night's game at the Britannia Stadium
Stoke City teenager Oliver Shenton made his league debut against Manchester City last night, just two days after the funeral of his mother.
Mark Hughes offered 17-year-old Shenton a chance to end a horrible week on a high when the midfielder replaced N'Zonzi in the 94th minute.
Ollie Shenton's mother, Mandy, recently lost her 15 year battle with breast cancer and her funeral service was held on Monday.
Shenton only signed his first professional contract with Stoke in November and before last night, he had only previously appeared as a substitute against Portsmouth in the League Cup last month.
Hughes' touching gesture wasn't the only support the youngster received. Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard, who lost his mother Pat in 2008, went out of his way at full time to swap shirts with the youngster.
A lovely, touching reminder that footballers can be very, very decent people.
Ollie's brother is raising money in tribute to their mother by running the London marathon. Here's how you can get involved:
