Van Gaal hails United's spirit after last gasp draw

Louis van Gaal hailed the "fantastic spirit" of his players after a late equaliser earned Manchester United a 1-1 draw with West Ham on Sunday.
Cheikhou Kouyate opened the scoring for the Hammers four minutes into the second half and Sam Allardyce's side were moments away from all three points.
However, Netherlands international Daley Blind struck a stoppage-time volley to earn United a point, and LVG was delighted with the attitude of his charges.

He told BBC Sport: "I've seen fantastic spirit and character from my team after going 1-0 behind. I told my players that and thanked them.
"The first half was not good enough, all first and second balls we lost and that's why we couldn't get out of the pressure of West Ham.

Allardyce accuses Reds of "long ball" tactics

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce was disappointed that his side had failed to hold on for all three points after their 1-1 draw with Manchester United, believing his side were good value for victory and lamenting their inability to deal with "long ball United".
Cheikhou Kouyate scored a wonderful opening goal five minutes into the second period, and the Hammers looked set for what would have been a deserved three points.

But in the 92nd minute, Dutch international Daley Blind cracked home a perfectly-executed volley to hand Louis van Gaal's men a share of the spoils, putting a dent in West Ham's European ambitions.
"In the end, we couldn't cope with long ball United - it was thump it forward and see what happens. It's not how you normally see United play but it worked for them in the end.
"If you look at the amount of saves David de Gea made today he is probably just as worthy of them getting the draw as Daley Blind getting the equaliser."

Rojo: We're not out of title race yet

Marcos Rojo has warned Chelsea: Manchester United can still hunt you down.
The Argentine defender has impressed since Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal paid Sporting Lisbon £16million for him last summer.
Rojo, 24, scored his first United goal in their 3-0 FA Cup replay win over Cambridge United on Tuesday.

"I thought Chelsea were far ahead of us in the table, but everyone at United says we can catch them," the South American said prior to Sunday's draw at West Ham.
"We will not give up hope. We'll first aim to overtake Manchester City, and it is a good challenge for us.

OPINION: Too many square pegs in round holes at Upton Park

The last time West Ham beat Manchester United, in a 2010 League Cup quarter-final, their club shop sold commemorative mugs to mark the result.
These days, a victory over the men from Old Trafford would not have felt deserving of its own merchandising range.
Sam Allardyce enjoyed the chance for a jibe at the long-ball tactics employed by Louis Van Gaal to snatch a draw with a fortuitous 91st-minute equaliser.

Big Sam, who has endured those sort of route-one criticisms throughout his managerial career, knew full well that his Hammers side had played all of the velvety football against a team masterminded by the supposedly cultured Louis Van Gaal.
It was only when the visitors brought on Marouane Fellaini and adopted a more direct approach that they truly troubled West Ham.
Because, despite a red-carpet team-sheet, Van Gaal’s United rarely excite. They do not play with the same intensity or tempo as Sir Alex Ferguson’s great teams. And they never blow away opponents in classic glory, glory Man United style.

Manchester United and David De Gea have begun talks over a new contract at Old Trafford, his agent says.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper has been in outstanding form this season and has been linked with a summer move to Real Madrid.
But De Gea's agent, Jorge Mendes, says he is in talks with United over a new deal for his client.
"I am negotiating with Manchester United about De Gea’s renewal," Mendes told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser on Sunday night.
"It is not true that De Gea has found a deal with Real Madrid. I’m negotiating with Manchester United his extension."
