Arsenal transfer window verdict: Gabriel & Bielik deals mean Wenger can be happy with January business

Arsene Wenger would probably say his season is going well because there’s still plenty of games left in the Premier League, they’re in the fifth round of the FA Cup and have reached the last 16 of the Champions League.
I think if you asked the average fan, they’d be in a good mood this week but would probably mark it down as a C in old fashioned school marking terms.
Why? Because, while the season promises much, the first half of the season has been unpredictable and inconsistent. After last season’s flirt with the title race and the signing of Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal fans raised their hopes.
Yet, incredibly, the win over Aston Villa was the first time they’ve won three in a row in the Premier League all season. If they’d been more consistent then they’d be challenging for the title. They’ve hit the heights, but also disappointed.
The Gunners should be higher up the league but for the fact they failed to strengthen the squad well enough in the summer - particularly in defence - and left themselves short. They have at least addressed the defensive issue in January withthe signing of £15m Brazilian Gabriel. But the injuries have bitten again.
Arsenal have a good home draw in the FA Cup against Middlesbrough. They are well capable of beating Monaco in the Champions League. They can finish third in the Premier League. The rest of the season gives them optimism.
