Read: Messi Outshines Ronaldo In 2015 So Far
The Argentine scored his 22nd goal of the campaign against Villarreal this weekend, while Ronaldo was serving the first game of his two-match ban.
However, Ronaldo still leads the La Liga goal-scoring charts with 28 goals. But out of the Portuguese’s 28 strikes, eight came from the penalty spot.
Messi, meanwhile, only scored one spot-kick, meaning the Argentine has scored one more goal from open play than his long-standing rival.
The 27-year-old has outscored Ronaldo in 2015, scoring seven league goals while Ronaldo has only scored three so far.
Ronaldo will miss his second game against Sevilla on Wednesday, but Messi won’t be able to close the gap even further because Los Blancos are playing a postponed match (due to FIFA Club World Cup) to catch up with the rest of the league.
If Real would beat Sevilla, they would extend their lead on Barcelona to four points. Ronaldo will return from his ban on the weekend when the log leaders face Atletico Madrid.
